DARE DAY at Cavendish Primary: A Powerful Partnership in Purpose

We want to highlight our partners Nancefield Baptist Church, Johannesburg, and the work they are doing in Cavendish Primary School. Have a read about what they have to so far about the Dare Program:

The start of transformation

Our DARE journey officially began with Session One, facilitated by six trained leaders under the capable direction of Ashley Phillips. A total of 38 learners, aged 12 to 14 and currently in Grade 7, eagerly took part.

The session opened with a warm welcome speech by school principal Mr. Mervin Louw, joined by the school's Life Orientation teacher. Topics covered included Identity, Belonging, Relationships, and Purpose—core elements that lay the foundation for self-awareness and growth.

The presence of Pastor Thomas Merime, who delivered the closing remarks and Benediction, added a meaningful spiritual conclusion to the day.

A Moment That Moved Us All

While the entire session was impactful, the topic of Belonging particularly touched a deep emotional chord. Many boys in attendance come from challenging family situations, including single-parent homes or being raised by grandparents. Their vulnerability and willingness to engage were truly moving and affirmed the importance of these discussions.

A Hike with Heart

Originally scheduled for 12 April, Session Two was postponed due to permit challenges with the City of Johannesburg. Nevertheless, the day finally arrived—and it was worth the wait!

31 boys participated in this outdoor session, with transportation provided by two church combis and volunteer drivers. The group included Principal Louw and two male educators who served as dedicated chaperones. All learners had submitted completed indemnity forms ahead of the event.

Exploring Manhood in Nature

The topic for Session Two was "Manhood and Sex", an essential and often under-discussed area in the lives of young boys. Set against the serene backdrop of the nature reserve, the learners opened up in ways we had not seen before. The conversation was honest, heartfelt, and much needed.

A shared lunch of "biff" (quartos of chips and polony) rounded off the day before we departed at 13h00.

Looking Ahead

We are now in the planning stages for Session Three, which will take place during Term 3. This session will be especially meaningful, as we will invite the learners' parents to witness a Certificate and DARE Declaration Ceremony.

We give God all the glory for what He is doing through this program and in the lives of these young men. Please continue to pray for our team, the learners, and the upcoming session.

Together, we DARE to make a difference.
