Dream Day: Empowering Girls in Mpumalanga

On November 27, 2024, Our partners Thembalethu Nkomazi organised a Dream Day in Mpumalanga, Nkomazi, at Bosfontein’s Mbambiso Secondary School. The event marked a significant milestone in empowering young women and girls. The Dream Day aimed to foster a sense of identity, belonging, and purpose among attendees while addressing critical topics relevant to their lives.

A Gathering for Growth and Empowerment

The event was intimate yet impactful, with 24 participants in attendance. Each of these young women arrived ready to engage, learn, and grow. The program covered essential themes, including identity, belonging, purpose, puberty, menstrual management, femininity and myths, as well as resources available for support.

One of the standout activities involved the use of balloons. Each participant wrote down hurtful things that others had said about them on the balloon and then poped it, symbolizing the process of letting go of negativity. This powerful moment allowed the girls to express their feelings and embrace a new perspective of self-worth and resilience.

Highlights and Impact

The event’s success was evident in the energy and excitement of the girls who participated. Many shared how much they enjoyed the balloon activity, which provided a safe space to address their emotions and challenge negative perceptions. The program’s focus on identity and belonging resonated deeply, helping the girls recognize that they are not defined by others’ opinions but by their inherent value and purpose, as affirmed by their faith.

Looking Ahead

By the end of the day, participants left with a renewed sense of self and a clearer understanding of their worth and potential. This positive outcome has inspired plans for future Dream Day events. Thembalethu Nkomazi aims to expand these trainings to other schools in the region, continuing to empower young women and girls. The goal is to ensure that every participant leaves knowing they are not defined by societal labels but by their unique identity and the purpose bestowed upon them by God.

A Call to Action

Dream Days serve as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where young women can feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s more than just an event; it uplifts and empowers the next generation of women leaders. With continued efforts, initiatives like this can spark lasting change, helping girls believe in themselves and their ability to shape a brighter future.

Thembalethu Nkomazi and Nompumelelo Mlambo have set a powerful example of community leadership and dedication to the well-being of young women. Through events like the Dream Day, they are building a foundation for confidence, self-awareness, and empowerment that will benefit generations to come. Here's to more impactful gatherings and the continued celebration of dignity, identity, and purpose.
