A Story of Hope and Transformation from KZN

For many young girls, having a safe space to talk, be heard and discover their worth can make a lasting difference.

Through The Dignity Campaign’s Dream Mentorship Program, girls are given a space where they can build confidence, explore their identity and purpose, and discover that they are not alone.

One young girl, whose identity we have changed to protect her privacy, experienced a particularly difficult season in her life.

During one of the mentorship sessions, her mentor noticed that she was deeply distressed and crying. When they spoke privately, she shared that she had been struggling emotionally and felt that life was no longer worth living.

She was also living with epilepsy and had experienced frightening episodes at school, where other children would laugh when she had a seizure. At home, she experienced disturbing visions and was carrying a tremendous amount of fear and worry. Her family had tried different ways to support her, but she continued to struggle.

The mentorship team listened, supported her and prayed with her. They also connected with her family and, with their permission, visited their home to pray together.

During that visit, the girl and her family prayed together, read the Bible and explored faith and hope. She chose to put her trust in Jesus.

Afterwards, she described feeling as though a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders. For her, it was a moment of relief, hope and a new beginning.

Her family also described experiencing a significant change. They began attending church, and other members of the family have since chosen to explore their faith too.

According to the girl and her family, her health has also changed dramatically. They say that she has not experienced the seizures she previously struggled with since that time. Today, she is passionate about worship and loves praising God.

Her story is one example of the kind of transformation that can happen when a young person is given a safe space, a trusted adult and the opportunity to be seen and heard.

And her story is not the only one.

Through the Dream Mentorship Program, girls have reported growing in confidence, making healthier choices and finding new hope for their futures. One girl even left behind a struggle with drugs after being part of the program.

We believe mentorship is about more than a program or a monthly meeting. It is about walking alongside young people through the challenges they face and reminding them of their dignity, their worth and their potential.

For this young girl and her family, the journey has brought renewed hope and a deepened faith.

This is why we do what we do, creating spaces where girls can discover that their story is not over, and that they have a future worth dreaming about.
